1 Study Figures 1, 2 and 3 which show the passage of a depression over the British Isles on the 25th January1990.
(a)  Prepare a summary of the weather on the 25th January in London for a late night news programme.
You should describe the changes in the weather that have occurred, and also link these changes to the passage of the depression.
(b)  Flooding usually results from a combination of factors such as slope, human activity, soil properties and storrns.
With reference to the non-urban areas of one drainage basin in the British Isles that you have studied, show how these factors may combine to produce flooding.
(c)  Describe one attempt made by people to reduce the occurrence of flooding.                               20 MARKS    

2   (a) Study Photograph A, which is provided on a separate sheet. It shows part of a rural area within the Trent drainage basin.
   (i)   Identify the various human activities shown in the photograph.
   (ii)  Suggest the possible effects of these activities on the hydrology of the area.
(b)  With reference to a drainage basin within the British Isles that you have studied
   (i)   describe two different valley cross profiles that exist along the course of the river(s) in that drainage basin;
   (ii)  show how fluvial processes have contributed to the formation of the cross profiles you have described in B)(I)  20 MARKS

3 (a)  Describe the changes in national voting patterns (in elections to the House of Commons) which have taken place in the United Kingdom within the last 30 years.
   (b)  Discuss the extent to which these changes are a reflection of the changes that have taken place in manufacturing and service industries within the United Kingdom. 15 MARKS

4        State intervention (either economic or social) has taken place within the United Kingdom during the last 30 years in order to improve conditions in some regions and cities.
(a)   Outline two examples of state intervention that have taken place.
(b)    Identify one piece of evidence which could be used to show the impact of a form of state intervention. Show how it can be used for this purpose.
(c)    Evaluate the success of any example of state intervention that you have studied.15 MARKS

5        Answer the following with reference to one or more cities of 50000 population or more, within the United Kingdom, that you have studied.
(a)    Outline the degree of geographical segregation of ethnic groups that exists.

(b)    Suggest reasons why this ethnic segregation has developed.
(c)    Discuss two social issues (for example, housing, education, health) that have arisen from ethnic segregation in cities.15 MARKS

6        Answer the following question by referring to competition/conflict over the use of a resource in an area with one or more of the following characteristics.                    high landscape value                    coastline                urban fringe

  (a) Identify two different groups of people and/or organisations which were in competition/conflict with each other over the use of the resource, and suggest reasons for their attitudes.
  (b)     For the people and/or organisation wanting change in the area, describe the main environmental changes that were likely to take place if the proposals were successful.
  (c) Suggest how planning and/or market processes may operate in order to resolve the conflict.

7(a) With reference to exarnples, describe the differences between renewable and non-renewable resources.
  (b) Discuss the problems associated with estimating the reserves of, and demands for, resources. In your answer you should include some reference to possible solutions to these problems.
  (c) Outline either a pessimistic or an optimistic approach to the use of resources by people.15 MARKS

 (a)  What is meant by each of the following terms?

 (b) Choose one system of harnessing energy which is either intermediate technology or advanced technology.
      (i)      Name and briefly outline the system of harnessing energy.
      (ii)     Suggest the reasons for adopting this particular system in an area that you have studied.
      (iii)    Discuss the effects of this system on the physical and human environments. 15 MARKS
